SITXFSA001 is the entry level unit of competency for food safety training within the Hospitality sector. It includes basic food safety practices such as personal hygiene and conduct, food handling, housekeeping and waste disposal and responsibilities where work involves preparation or serving of food in establishments such as cafes, clubs, hotels or bars.

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Statement of Attainment for unit: SITXFSA001 Use Hygienic Practices for Food Safety

This unit, along with SITXFSA002, comprises the Food Safety Supervisor qualification for workers in the Hospitality industry and is designed to ensure that trainees can handle food safely; identify, control and report food safety hazards; and comply with personal hygiene standards.

System Requirements

  • A valid Email account.
  • A valid form of identification.
  • Either a Digital camera / scanner / fax / iPhone or ability to upload documents from your files to your student account.
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A reliable Browser *preferably Chrome

Getting Started

Step 1: Register and pay for your course - Upload your ID and create your USI (Unique Student Identifier number)

Step 2: Complete your learning course at your own pace and from the convenience of home using the materials provided by us;

Step 3: Complete the course content and assessments;

Step 4: Before we can issue you with a SA Food Safety Certificate you will need to provide us with a;

- Unique Student Identifier ( Note: you can apply for this via your student account during enrolment)

- Copy of the identification that you used to apply for your Unique Student Identification or photo identification (You can upload this to your student account upon enrolment)

- Completed mandatory government survey about your training experience (This can be completed online in your training account)

Step 5: Once your assessment has been marked and approved by our assessor, you’ll receive a downloadable SA Food Safety certificate. You can start work immediately!

What You Will Learn - Unit Descriptor

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to use personal hygiene practices to prevent contamination of food that might cause food-borne illnesses. It requires the ability to follow predetermined organisational procedures and to identify and control food hazards.

Application of the Unit

This unit applies to all tourism, hospitality and catering organisations with permanent or temporary kitchen premises or smaller food preparation or bar areas.

This includes restaurants, cafes, clubs, hotels, bars, tour operators, attractions, function, event, exhibition and conference caterers, educational institutions, aged care facilities, correctional centres, hospitals, defence forces, cafeterias, kiosks, canteens, fast food outlets, residential caterers, in-flight and other transport caterers.

It applies to food handlers which can be any person who directly handles food or food contact surfaces food such as cutlery, plates and bowls. People at many levels use this skill in the workplace during the course of their daily activities, including cooks, chefs, caterers, kitchen stewards, kitchen hands, bar and food and beverage attendants and sometimes room attendants and front office staff.

How You Will be Assessed

 

You will learn everything you need to know with Access All Areas Training! We offer great online courses that are easy to follow and understand. Complete your course in your own time and in your own home. Get your certificate same day as completion * prior to 6pm!

The SA Food Safety training will be provided to you as an online course and is divided into several sections.

You will be provided with an assessments throughout the unit.  You will be required to answer all questions correctly.  If you get a question wrong you will be directed to review the course material after which you may reattempt the question.

Case studies require you to implement what you have learnt in typical practical scenarios which are contained in the Third Party Observation Task - click here to view, making up the skills assessment component & provide evidence of practical and verbal communication skills.

30% of the questions require free text answers. Approximate timings on each of the Food Safety assessment tasks include:

  • Section 1 - 5 minutes
  • Section 2 - 5 minutes
  • Section 3 - 5 minutes
  • Section 4 - 5 minutes
  • Section 5 - 5 minutes
  • Section 6 - 5 minutes
  • Section 7 - 5 minutes
  • Final free text assessment & Observation - 30 minutes

Important: If you are planning on completing the Food Safety Supervisor course - Level 2 you must first complete the Food Handlers Certificate - Level 1 as this course is a prerequisite to Level 2.

Duration:

Total duration of unit including learning content and assessments is *4 hours - this may vary depending on your previous experience and ability to navigate the online portal.

Learning Skills Required

 

To ensure you receive an adequate level of support with your training and assessment, please consider the following questions.

  • Do you consider yourself to have any disability, special needs, reading or writing difficulties that may have an impact on your ability to complete this online course?
  • Do you believe you have the literacy skills to read and interpret documents such as:
    • Identification (ID) cards?
    • Proof of age cards and driver’s licences?
    • Statutory signage and warning signs?
  • Wording within advertising or promotional material, such as in‑house policies and procedures and any other general plain English regulatory and advisory information issued by local, or state and territory liquor licensing authorities?
  • Do you believe that you have the numeracy skills to measure and calculate standard drinks or samples and calculate blood alcohol levels to determine alcohol consumption?

Please note:

  • Random sampling of students is conducted to ensure the authenticity of those completing learning and assessment online. A minimum standard of language, literacy and numeracy is required to complete online learning. If the participant fraudulently declares the minimum level is met, a statement of attainment may not be issued.
  • All students are questioned at the time of enrolment where they are provided with the opportunity to declare special needs in this area. If this is not indicated, the student has declared they have the minimum language, literacy and numeracy skills to proceed with online learning.
  • In addition, all students are required to undertake a short LLN self-assessment prior to the commencement of training. Satisfactory completion of the assessment is required prior to issuance of a statement of attainment
