SITHFAB021 – Provide responsible service of alcohol - Unit Requirements

This nationally recognised unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to responsibly sell or serve alcohol.

Responsible practices must be undertaken wherever alcohol is sold or served, including where alcohol samples are served during on-site product tastings. This unit, therefore, applies to any workplace where alcohol is sold or served, including all types of hospitality venues, packaged liquor outlets and wineries, breweries and distilleries.


The unit applies to all levels of sales personnel involved in the sale, service and promotional service of alcohol in licensed premises. Those selling or serving alcohol may include food and beverage attendants; packaged liquor salespersons selling in person, over the phone or online; winery, brewery and distillery cellar door staff; and supplier sales representatives. The unit also applies to security staff who monitor customer behaviour and to the licensee who is ultimately responsible for responsible service of alcohol (RSA) management.

This unit covers the RSA skill and knowledge requirements common to all States and Territories. Some legislative requirements and knowledge will differ across borders. In some cases, after completion of this unit, state and territory liquor authorities require candidates to complete a bridging course to address these specific differences.


Assessment is undertaken using different formats, yet:

  • All assessments are untimed and are conducted as open book assessment (this means you can refer to your Learner Guide or any other material during the assessment).
  • You must read and respond to all questions, 
  • You must complete the task independently and using your own words.
  • No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be Satisfactory or Not Yet Satisfactory.
  • Not Yet Satisfactory will be followed up by the assessor with feedback. You must review this and resubmit your assessment considering the feedback
  • As you complete this assessment task you are predominately demonstrating your knowledge to your trainer/assessor.

The assessments used to assess competence in this program include: 

  • Multi choice quiz questions
  • Free Text questions to interpret learner’s own interpretation of given scenarios and legislative documents
  • Case Study steps through a possible workplace scenario. The leaner must answer questions about the scenario.
  • WISE 3.1 (Workplace Industry Simulated Environment) - 6 interactive video scenarios with between 5-10 interactive questions that require correct response
  • WISE 3.2 (Workplace Industry Simulated Environment - 2 video uploads of the learner in a simulated environment responding to a suite of scenarios
  • Competency Conversation - if minor gaps have been identified, an assessor may contact the learner to ensure understanding


Your course will take you around six (6) hours to work through the learning material and then around two (2) hours of assessment, depending upon your previous experience.
To ensure that you meet the learning outcomes for this unit, you are asked to complete the following General Assessment requirements – there are two (2) main sections of the assessment – Knowledge and Performance.

  • Knowledge assessments assess your ability to understand legislation, operational requirements to maintain required standards and duty of care around the service and consumption of alcohol.
  • Performance evidence is gathered by assessing your ability to undertake practical activities in working in a business which serves and sells alcohol, safely.


Learners can expect to complete the following requirements during assessment: 
The learner will move through five (5) modules of learning content.

Multi Quiz

At the completion of each of the six (6) Learning Modules, multichoice questions are to be answered. These must be answered correctly before progressing to the next learning module. You do get a couple goes at each question. If you do get in wrong a couple of times, the third time means you are asked to look at the learning material again. 

Practical – Free Text

At the completion of the learning modules you will be asked to respond to a series of questions. The questions relate to the learning undertaken along with basic rules and policies used in the liquor industry. 

Case Study

The case study reflects a workplace situation which you as an employee, would have to face. You must respond to the scenario. This is done by answering question about the evolving situation.

Interactive Videos - WISE 3.1 

A further series of interactive videos filmed in a hospitality simulated workplace environment will be viewed by the learner. The learner is required to interact with the video scenarios, submitting correct responses. There are between five to ten (5-10) questions per video scenario. Each scenario must be answered correctly before being allowed to move onto the next section.

Role Play – WISE 3.2

There are three (3) video uploads a learner must submit. The learner is required to video themselves playing their part (role play) as the ‘Bar Staff’ addressing the scenaros described within the assessment material and depict a typical on the job requirement of demonstrating your ability. Each video asks you to complete a particular required skill. This must be demonstrated in the video. Make sure you can be seen in the video.

Competency Conversation (if required)

If minor gaps have been identified, then a Competency Conversation may take place to determine you ability to meet the requirements of the unit.


  • Upon submission of all your assessments, a Trainer and Assessor will review your work. If any of your answers or videos do not meet requirements, feedback will be sent to you. Please read through this carefully, review the learning material and resubmit your work.
  • Please allow two (2) working days for assessment.
  • If you are marked as correct and email will be sent to you.
  • If your work does not meet requirements, feedback will be sent to you.
